What makes a sectional door insulated
A standard sectional door is a single steel skin. An insulated sectional door is a sandwich: a steel outer skin, an insulating core, and an inner skin. That construction does three things. It slows heat moving through the door. It deadens the drumming noise a single-skin door makes in wind and rain. And it makes each panel much more rigid, so the door tracks straighter and dents less easily.

When insulation is worth it, and when it is not
Worth it: a room over the garage, a garage that shares a wall with a living area, a garage used as a workshop, office or gym, or a house on an exposed site where a single-skin door drums in the wind. In those homes the difference is noticeable every day.
Less worth it: a detached garage nobody spends time in, or a garage on a farm shed used purely for storage. Spend the money on a good motor instead. We would rather tell you that at the showroom than sell you a door you do not need.
A recent insulated install
Not every insulated door is a plain panel. We recently fitted Abodo timber-clad sectional doors, insulated, with high-gloss black ACM backing and fully powder-coated hardware, installed on a 35-degree pitch and driven by variable-speed jack-shaft motors. Allan Goodger's comment on the finished job: "Great looking doors. Awesome install." That is the top end of what an insulated sectional door can be. Most of the ones we fit are simpler, and just as warm.

A large share of our work comes from builders and house companies who come to us for every job, and new-build garage door selection is a daily conversation: sizes, colours, insulation, motors. How much warmer is an insulated garage door?
Enough to notice in the rooms next to and above the garage, especially in a Waikato winter. The exact difference depends on how well the rest of the garage is sealed and insulated. An insulated door on a garage with gaps around the frame and an uninsulated ceiling will help, but not as much as it could. Ask us to look at the whole garage when we quote, not just the door.
Are insulated sectional doors quieter?
Yes. The insulating core stops the panels drumming in wind and rain, and the stiffer panels move more smoothly on the tracks. Paired with a quality motor, an insulated door is close to silent, which matters when someone sleeps above the garage.
Can you insulate my existing garage door?
Sometimes, with retrofit panels, but the result is never as good as a door built with an insulated core, and it adds weight the springs and motor were not set up for. If your current door is in good condition, we will tell you honestly whether a retrofit or a replacement makes more sense.

Do insulated doors need a different motor?
Insulated panels are heavier, so the door needs springs and a motor rated for its weight. We size both when we quote. For unusual installs like the 35-degree pitch Abodo doors, we use jack-shaft motors that mount beside the door instead of on the ceiling.
